How to: DIY Grief Bracelet

Tutorial for DIY Memorial Bracelet

When we grieve, wearing a bracelet or necklace in remembrance of our loved one can provide a bit of comfort. This DIY grief bracelet design is simple and doesn’t require any special tools.

Infinity symbol and heart: eternal love. Even after death, our love for our special person doesn’t end. It’s forever.

Materials:

  • Nylon cord, approximately 1 1/2 millimeters in diameter (like the bottom two in the assorted pack shown in the photo below; I tried Paracord #95 at first but it was too thick)
  • Infinity symbol (I found this one in the jewelry making section next to the Paracord at Hobby Lobby)
  • Heart charm (you could also use/add an angel wing charm or whatever charm you like)
  • Scissors
  • Lighter (sorry, forgot to include it in the photo)

Directions:

  • Cut 2 strands of nylon cord, each measuring 22 inches long.
  • Fold one of the cords in half and guide fold through the infinity symbol from the top so that the loop is on the bottom.
  • Grab the loose ends, thread through the loop and pull tight to make a Lark’s Head Knot.
  • Repeat on the other side with the second cord.
  • Slide the heart charm (and/or other charms) onto one of the cords.
  • Slide the charm(s) close to the infinity symbol and tie a regular knot (basic overhand knot). Then tighten the knot.
  • Center the infinity symbol on top of your wrist, then bring the cords together beneath your wrist to determine the desired length when wearing the bracelet. (This is where the knots for the adjustable closure will go.)
  • Let go of one of the double strands but keep your grasp on the other so that you’ll know approximately where to place the knot for the adjustable closure. Tie a knot there but don’t pull it tight yet.
  • Repeat on the other side.
  • Pull the double strand of cord from one side through the center of the knot on the other side.
  • Repeat on the opposite side.
  • Tighten the knots somewhat but not all the way, just in case you need to adjust the position. Then carefully try the bracelet on to make sure the knots are in the correct spot. The knots should be close together or touching when you wear the bracelet. Adjust if necessary, then pull the knots tight.
  • Pull the bracelet over the widest part of your hand to determine the necessary length of the “tails” so that you can easily put on and take off the bracelet.
  • Once you have the bracelet adjusted to the widest size you need for slipping on and off, tie a knot in the double strands, close to the knots that make up the adjustable closure.
  • Double check to make sure the bracelet fits, then cut off the excess cord. Carefully hold a lighter near, but not directly on, the ends of the cords to melt and seal the ends and keep them from fraying.
  • Simply pull on the tails to tighten the bracelet; slide the adjusting knots apart to loosen.

Love doesn’t end with death—love is forever.
